A figure 8 style descender for controlled rappel and rescue.
The SMC Escape 8 is a figure 8 style descender for controlled rappel and lowering. It is a simple, durable device that fits in a rescue kit or as a backup descent tool.
A figure 8 is the most basic friction descender: rope through the large eye, around the neck, and onto your carabiner. Friction depends on your brake hand and rope type, so there is no automatic lock.
Tree crews use 8s mainly for rescue and rappel, not for working positioning. Keep one in the rescue bag and train with it. See other devices in ascent and descent.
A figure 8 is also cheap and simple, which is useful for a backup or for a crew member who does not climb every day. Keep it in a labeled rescue bag with a compatible rope and carabiner.
Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every use, and be used only by trained climbers. Learn tie-off methods from a qualified trainer.
Check for rope grooves, sharp edges, cracks and drop damage. Retire the descender if wear grooves are deep or any edge is sharp.
Practice rescues with the full kit at least a few times a year so the crew is ready. Keep the descender clean and dry, and store it away from sharp tools or heavy hardware that could gouge the wear surfaces.

No. A figure 8 needs a constant brake hand on the rope.
Check SMC's instructions for the rope diameter range and the friction it gives on your rope.
