The Rock Exotica RockGrab 90 is a rope grab that rides a fixed line and locks when loaded. Crews use rope grabs as a backup on access lines and to capture progress in haul and tensioning systems.

Where a rope grab fits

A rope grab follows you along a line and locks if you load it suddenly, which makes it a common backup on access and rope work. On the rigging side, it can serve as a progress capture so a haul system holds its gains when you reset.

Rope grabs work best on the rope types they were designed for. Wet, icy or muddy rope can change how quickly the cam bites, so check how it behaves in the conditions you will be working in. Keep the rope above the grab clear of edges that could cut it when loaded.

Match the device to the rope diameter and type in Rock Exotica's instructions. Compare it with other rope grabs before you choose.

Training and inspection

Install a rope grab the right way up; a reversed grab will not lock. Test it on the rope at ground level before every use.

Treat it as life-support gear: follow the manufacturer's instructions, check it before every climb, and retire it after a hard fall, a drop onto a hard surface, or any damage you can't explain. Use it within an ANSI Z133 program and only after proper training.

Store it clean and dry, away from chemicals and corrosive materials, and keep the cam moving freely. A grab that sticks or drags on the rope should come out of service until it has been checked.
