Buying guide

Picking replacement gaffs

Tree gaffs must match the mounting style of your spurs, such as screw-and-dowel or other systems. Short gaffs suit thin-barked hardwoods; longer gaffs reach through thick bark on conifers. Install gaffs per the maker's instructions, keep them sharp with the correct profile, and retire gaffs that are worn short, bent or cracked. Inspect straps and pads before each climb too.

Straps, pads and other parts

Spur parts such as the Edelrid Talon upper strap system and Distel replacement pads with rings and straps let you rebuild worn spurs instead of replacing the whole set. Use parts made for your spur model. Bashlin gaffs and other brands may not be interchangeable, so check the mounting before you buy. Sharpen gaffs with a file using the correct profile, never on a grinder, which can overheat the steel.

If you are unsure about any part, ask the spur maker or take the spurs out of service until they can be checked. Spurs are life-critical gear when you are working a spar.
