ClimbingSafety

The Buckingham magnetic gaff cover slips over a spur gaff and holds in place with a magnet, protecting the point and anyone handling the spurs. It goes on and off quickly, which makes it more likely to actually get used between climbs.

Why cover your gaffs

A sharp gaff is what keeps you in the tree, and it is also what cuts hands, tears gear bags, and punctures truck seats. Every time the spurs come off your legs, the gaffs should be covered. A dull or chipped gaff from rattling around the truck bed is a gaff that can cut out.

A magnetic cover is quick to put on, so it gets used. Find other guards and spur parts in our replacement gaffs and parts section.

Covers also protect the gaffs from each other. Spurs packed in a bag together will knock their points against the opposite shank every time the truck hits a pothole. A quick magnetic cover on each gaff stops that and saves a lot of time at the sharpening stone. Keep a spare cover in the truck, since they tend to get left on stumps.

Fit and care

Check that the cover suits your gaff style and length. Make sure the steel gaff seats fully in the cover before you pack the spurs away. Magnetic retention works on steel; confirm it holds well on your gaffs.

Keep the covers clean of sap and grit, which can dull the point. Replace a cover that is cracked or no longer holds. Inspect gaffs for sharpness, cracks, and tightness before every climb, and do spur work only with training and under ANSI Z133.
