Buying guide

Choosing a pole saw

Telescoping pole saws are compact and quick to adjust, while sectional poles with a separate saw head are tougher and easier to repair. Pick a saw blade length that suits the size of the limbs you cut, and make sure the head fits your pole system. Fiberglass poles are needed for work near power, but only qualified line-clearance workers should be near energized lines. Wear a helmet and eye protection and stay out from under the cut.

Heads, blades and scabbards

A cast saw head, like the Marvin, mounts a pruning saw blade on the end of a pole. Saw blades for pole saws come in different lengths and tooth patterns. A pole saw scabbard protects the blade during transport and keeps the crew safe from the teeth. The Jameson LS kit combines a pruner, a pole saw and poles in one package. A telescoping aluminum pole saw like the Nobasu is light and compact, but aluminum is conductive and must not be used near power.
