3M makes the Peltor hearing protection a lot of tree crews wear under and on their helmets. The 3M Peltor Optime III is the high-attenuation muff people reach for when they run big saws, chippers and stump grinders all day.

Most tree work is loud work. A pro chainsaw, a chipper and a stump grinder will all push you past safe exposure long before lunch, and hearing damage does not come back. 3M's Peltor line is one of the most common answers on the job: headband muffs for ground crews, helmet-mount muffs that clip into the slots on many arborist helmets, and foam plugs for anyone who prefers them.
The Optime family comes in a few levels of attenuation, with the Optime III at the heavy end for high-noise equipment. Helmet-mount versions let you flip the cups up when you are talking through a cut and snap them back down when the saw starts. If you run a radio setup, check fit and compatibility with your helmet before you buy, and replace ear cushions when they harden or crack, since a poor seal costs you protection.
