SafetyClimbingGroundPro grade

The 3M Peltor LiteCom FRS is a hearing protection headset with a built-in two-way radio, so a climber and the ground crew can talk clearly over saws and the chipper. LiteCom headsets are a common upgrade for crews tired of shouting and hand signals.

Why crews use radio headsets

Rigging calls, drop-zone clears and tie-in changes all depend on the climber and ground crew understanding each other. A radio headset makes those calls clear, hands-free and quick, which cuts confusion and speeds up the job.

Because the radio is built into the hearing protection, you are not trading safety for communication.

The LiteCom also lets the ground crew warn the climber about a hazard they cannot see, like someone walking into the drop zone or a vehicle approaching, without waiting for the saw to stop.

Fit and use

Check that the headset fits over or with your helmet; many crews use a helmet-mount version. Make sure the whole crew is on compatible radios and the same channel before the first cut. Follow 3M's instructions for fit, battery care and radio use.

Radio is a supplement, not a replacement for agreed hand signals and a clear call-and-response system. Keep backup signals ready in case a battery dies.

Hearing protection only works if the seal is good. Check the cushions for cracks and replace them when they get hard, and keep hair and glasses arms from breaking the seal.

Charge or swap batteries at the end of each day so the headset is ready for the next morning.
