Pfanner Protos Bluetooth Communication System

The Pfanner Protos Bluetooth communication system is a headset made for the Protos Integral helmet. It fits into the helmet's ear protection so climbers and ground crew can talk hands-free over saw and chipper noise.

Talking over the noise

Hand signals and yelling work until a saw is running and the chipper is chewing. A helmet headset lets the climber call the next piece, tell the groundie to hold or let run, and hear the answer clearly. The Protos system is built into the ear protection of the Protos Integral helmet, so there is no loose earpiece or cord to snag.

Clear talk pays off most during rigging, when the climber needs the groundie to take a wrap, hold, or let a piece run at the right moment, and on big removals where the climber is out of sight from the lowering device. It also cuts down on the climber taking off ear protection to hear.

Use it as a tool, not a crutch

Agree on clear calls and a backup plan before the work starts, and stop work if the link drops during rigging. Communication between climber and ground is a core part of ANSI Z133 practice; a headset makes it easier but does not replace a job briefing or a trained crew.

Keep the volume low enough that the hearing protection still does its job. Charge the unit overnight and follow Pfanner's instructions for fitting and care.
