SafetyGround

This Pfanner Protos clear visor is a clear plastic screen for the Protos integrated helmet. Swap it in when your current lens is scratched, or keep it as the clear option for chipping, stump grinding and other jobs where mesh lets too much fine debris through.

When a clear visor beats mesh

Mesh visors are the standard for saw work because they do not fog and you can see through them in any light. But mesh lets fine dust through, and on a stump grinder or chipper that dust is constant. A clear visor stops it, which is why many Protos owners keep both and swap as the job changes.

Clear visors also make sense for spraying and for anyone tired of fine sawdust in their eyes. Pair it with safety glasses if your job calls for them. Browse more eye protection for mesh screens and glasses.

A clear visor is also handy when cutting with the sun low, since mesh can create glare and shadows that make it harder to read the kerf.

Fitting and keeping it clear

Install the visor following Pfanner's instructions for your version of the Protos and check that it locks in the up and down positions.

Wash it with water and a soft cloth; wiping off dry sawdust scratches clear plastic quickly. Replace it when scratches or cracks are in your line of sight.

Keep the clear visor in a soft bag when it is not on the helmet. Loose in a gear bin, it picks up scratches fast, and a scratched clear lens is harder to see through than a worn mesh one. Some users mark the date on a strip of tape when they fit a new visor so they know how long it has been in service.
