The highest-protection Optime muff, made to clip onto slotted helmets.
The Peltor Optime 105 helmet-mounted earmuff is the highest-attenuation model in 3M's Optime line, built on an attachment that clips into slotted helmets. It is a long-time favorite for chipper, grinder and saw crews who are around loud equipment all day.
The Optime line comes in three levels, and the 105 is the one with the most protection. Its larger cups are designed to handle low-frequency engine noise, which makes it a good match for chippers, stump grinders and big saws.
The trade-off is size: these muffs are bulkier than the lighter Optime models. If you run equipment all day, the extra protection is usually worth it. Compare the noise reduction rating on the product to your actual exposure.
Helmet-mounted muffs stay with the hard hat, so they are always there when the chipper starts. Flip them out to the rest position to talk, then back down when the noise starts again.
Make sure the muffs seal fully around your ears. Glasses arms, hats and hair under the cushion all reduce protection, so keep the seal clean. Wipe the cushions after sweaty days and replace them and the foam inserts when they harden, crack or flatten.
Check that the helmet attachment is listed as compatible with your helmet before ordering. Noise exposure from saws, chippers and grinders adds up quickly, so wear hearing protection whenever the equipment is running. More options are in our hearing protection section.
