ClimbingMaintenancePro grade

Weaver leather upper climber straps are the 26 inch straps that wrap the calf just below the knee and hold the top of your spur shanks against your leg. When the old pair cracks, stretches or the holes tear out, a fresh set brings back a solid, stable gaff.

Why upper straps matter

On spurs, the upper strap does most of the work of keeping the shank locked to your leg. If it is loose or stretched, the climber rolls on the calf, the gaff kicks out of the bark and you burn energy fighting it on every step. A firm 26 inch leather strap cinched over a good pad keeps the shank in line so the gaff sets where you put it.

Leather breaks in and shapes to your leg over the first few days. Expect to take up a hole or two as it settles. Pair new uppers with fresh lower straps if those are worn too, and see the rest of our climbing spurs and parts for pads and gaffs.

Care and replacement

Keep the leather clean and treat it with a leather conditioner now and then so it does not dry out and crack. Do not leave straps soaked in the truck or next to a heater. Check the buckle, keeper and stitching, and look for cracks or torn holes before each climb.

Spurs are for removals, not pruning live trees. Spur straps are part of your climbing system's footing, so replace them as soon as they are damaged, keep a lanyard around the stem at all times and follow ANSI Z133 and the maker's instructions.
