ClimbingPro grade

Buckingham Big Buck pads are wide replacement uppers for climbing spurs that spread pressure across the calf and keep the shank steady. They are a common upgrade for climbers whose stock pads dig in after an hour on the stem.

Why upgrade your pads

Pads take the load when you stand in your spurs. Narrow or worn pads concentrate that load and leave bruises on the calf. Big Buck pads use a wider padded shell that wraps more of the leg, and the stiffer shape helps the buck spur stay aligned so the gaff bites cleanly.

They are a common upgrade for Buckingham steel spurs and other compatible climbers.

New pads are also cheaper than new climbers. If your shanks and gaffs are in good shape, replacing the uppers is often all it takes to make an old pair feel new. The buckle closure is easy to adjust with gloves and holds firm through a full day of kicking in on removals.

Fit and inspection

Confirm the pads fit your climber model before ordering. Mount them so the top of the pad sits below the bend in the knee and the straps close snug without pinching. Inspect stitching, buckles and padding before each climb, and replace pads that are cracked or torn. Spurs are life-support gear: follow the manufacturer's instructions and ANSI Z133, and be trained before climbing.

Keep a pair of gaff guards on your spurs during storage so the points do not cut into the new pads or straps.
