SafetyClimbing

The Kask SC1 ear defenders are green helmet-mounted earmuffs made for the Super Plasma and Zenith helmets. They give climbers and ground workers hearing protection that stays on the helmet and flips up when it is time to talk.

SC1 or SC3

Kask offers its helmet ear defenders in more than one level. The SC1 is the lighter, lower-profile option, while the SC3 gives more attenuation for louder or longer exposure. A climber who runs a top-handle saw in short bursts may prefer the SC1 for comfort; someone feeding a chipper all day may want more.

Check the noise reduction rating on the product and compare it to the noise levels you work in. Kask's mount system lets you use them with a visor on the same helmet.

Because the defenders mount directly to the helmet, they do not press on the sides of your head like a headband muff, which helps when you wear them under a cold-weather liner.

Fit, care and replacement

Make sure the muffs seal fully around your ears. Glasses arms, hats and hair under the cushion all reduce protection, so keep the seal clean. Wipe the cushions after sweaty days and replace them and the foam inserts when they harden, crack or flatten.

Check that the SC1 is listed as compatible with your helmet before ordering. Noise exposure from saws, chippers and grinders adds up quickly, so wear hearing protection whenever the equipment is running. More options are in our hearing protection section.
