Port-a-Wrap with 5/8 in. Whoopie Sling

This kit pairs a port-a-wrap with a 5/8 inch whoopie sling, so the lowering device and its adjustable mount come together. The whoopie sling tightens to fit the trunk, which makes setup at the base of the tree quick.

Why a whoopie sling

A whoopie sling is an adjustable sling: pull the tail and the loop shrinks to snug against the trunk. That makes it easy to mount the port-a-wrap at a comfortable working height on trunks of different sizes without carrying several fixed slings.

Setup and care

Mount the sling snug on the trunk, clip the device so the line feeds straight on, and take enough wraps for the load. Keep the tail controlled and stand clear of the rope path. Heavy wood generates loads far beyond its weight, so add wraps rather than fighting the rope.

Check the sling for cuts, glazing and a worn bury, and the device for grooves and cracks, before each job. Rigging gear is for moving wood, not for life support. Match every component to the load with a working margin, follow the manufacturer's ratings and ANSI Z133, and make sure the crew is trained in rigging before relying on it. Note when each piece went into service, so worn gear gets retired on time instead of living on the truck for years.
