SafetyMaintenance

This Petzl STRATO upper foam replacement swaps out the comfort foam in a STRATO helmet. Sweat and grime wear foam out long before the shell, and fresh foam keeps the helmet fitting the way it should.

Why replace the foam

A helmet you wear every day collects sweat, sawdust and sunscreen. The foam pads compress, get smelly and stop holding the helmet where it should sit. Fresh foam brings back comfort and stops the helmet from shifting, which matters when you add ear muffs or a visor.

It is a simple fix that keeps a good helmet in service.

It also helps with hygiene. Helmets get passed between climbers on some crews, and fresh foam is an easy way to keep a shared helmet clean. Many climbers keep a spare set so they can wash one while wearing the other.

Fitting and helmet care

Remove the old foam, clean the inside of the shell with mild soap and water, and press the new foam into place as Petzl shows. Check the helmet fit and chin strap after the swap, and make sure your muffs still seal against your head; see our hearing protection if you need new muffs.

Replacing foam does not extend a helmet's service life. Retire the helmet after an impact or per Petzl's lifespan guidance, and inspect the shell and headband regularly.

Keep the old foam out of the bin until the new set is seated and the helmet fits right, so you can compare thickness and placement if anything feels off.
