Why sawyers upgrade the dogs

Felling dogs, or bucking spikes, give the saw something to pivot on. When you walk the saw through a big cut, a dog that grabs well lets you use leverage instead of pushing the bar into the wood. Stock spikes on some saws are short or blunt, and they slip on hard or frozen bark.

A 3-point dog has three teeth to set into the wood, which helps on removals, storm work and firewood when you are working near the full length of the bar.

Many sawyers also find better dogs help on smaller saws that are pushed into bigger wood than they were sold for. When the saw is near the end of its bar length, the ability to rock it on a solid pivot can make the difference between a clean cut and a pinched bar. Plan cuts so the bar is not trapped by compression wood.

Install and use

Check the fit for your Husqvarna model, then swap the dogs with the bolts tight and the clutch cover refitted correctly. Keep the dogs sharp and free of chips. Felling dogs do not change the basics: plan the escape route, keep the chain brake working, and wear chaps, a helmet, eye and ear protection. Felling should only be done by trained operators.
