The Husqvarna Vari-Cut S45 is a general-purpose diamond wheel for power cutters, used for cutting concrete, masonry and other building materials on the jobsite. It is a practical blade for crews who need to make occasional cuts in hardscape around tree and landscape work.

Why a tree crew might need one

Tree and landscape work does not always stop at the soil line. Crews sometimes need to cut out a section of concrete or pavers to reach roots, trim a curb that a root has lifted, or cut materials for a landscape bed. A power cutter with a diamond wheel like the Husqvarna Vari-Cut S45 handles those jobs.

The S45 sits in Husqvarna's Vari-Cut range as a general-purpose blade. It is meant for users who cut a mix of materials occasionally rather than specialists cutting one material all day.

If you only need to make a few cuts a year, renting a power cutter and buying a suitable blade may make more sense than owning the machine. If your crew does hardscape work regularly, owning a cutter and keeping a general-purpose blade on hand saves trips and rental fees.

Matching the blade to the saw

Diamond blades must match the machine. Check that the blade diameter, arbor size and maximum operating speed all match or exceed what your power cutter requires. Never run a blade on a machine that can spin it faster than its rated maximum speed. Mount it in the correct rotation direction, using the arrow on the blade.

The blade guard must be in place and adjusted correctly. If the blade does not fit the saw properly, do not use it.

Store blades flat or hung in a dry place, away from heavy tools that could bend the core. A blade with a bent core or a damaged arbor hole can wobble and is not safe to use.

Dust control and safety

Cutting concrete, masonry and stone creates respirable crystalline silica dust, which can cause serious lung disease. OSHA has a specific silica standard for construction. Use wet cutting or approved dust control methods, and wear appropriate respiratory protection as required. Wet cutting also keeps the blade cooler and extends its life.

Wear eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves and sturdy boots. Keep a firm stance, keep bystanders well back and watch for binding or pinching as the cut progresses. Power cutters can kick back. Only trained operators should use them, following the machine's operator manual.

Blade care

Let the blade do the work. Forcing it causes overheating and can glaze the segments, which slows cutting. If a blade stops cutting well, it may need dressing by making a few cuts in an abrasive material. Inspect the blade before each use for cracks, missing segments or damage to the core, and replace a damaged blade immediately.

Keep track of how much the segments have worn. When the diamond segments are close to the core, the blade is near the end of its life and should be replaced. Never use a blade with cracked or missing segments.
