The inner bumper spike for the 572XP. Grip and pivot point for big cuts.
This Husqvarna 572XP felling dog is the inside spike that sits next to the bar mount, giving the saw a pivot point against the wood. A sharp, solid felling dog makes bucking and felling cuts more controlled and less tiring, and worn or bent dogs slip on the bark.
When you are felling or bucking big wood, the felling dogs hold the saw against the log so you can pivot through the cut instead of muscling it. Dull or bent spikes slip, which makes cuts slower and less controlled.
The inside dog sits closest to the bar and takes a lot of wear. If it is rounded, bent or loose, replace it.
Felling dogs also protect the saw body. When you are bucking big logs, the dog takes the pressure instead of the clutch cover or the saw housing. A worn dog can let the saw slide or rock, which can lead to pinching or kickback in some cuts. Replace it when the spikes are rounded or bent, and keep the mounting screws tight. A good dog makes long days of felling and bucking easier.
Remove the bar and chain, take off the old dog, and fit the new one with the correct screws, tightened to spec. Check the outer dog at the same time.
Use the correct Husqvarna screws for the dog, since a screw that is too long can interfere with parts behind it. Check that the bar and chain sit and run freely once everything is back together.
Keep felling dogs tight, since a loose one can shift into the chain path. Find more 572XP parts in our chainsaw parts section.
