MaintenanceClimbingPro grade

The Husqvarna T540XP starter assembly is a complete recoil starter for the T540XP gas top-handle chainsaw. A climbing saw has to start when you need it, and a cracked housing, slipping pawl or broken recoil spring on a top-handle saw costs time and energy in the tree.

Why top-handle starters wear

Top-handle saws are started over and over during a climb, and they hang on a lanyard and bounce off the trunk. The starter housing takes hits, and the rope and recoil spring see more cycles than on many ground saws. If the rope won't return, the starter slips, or the housing is cracked, replace the assembly.

Check that you have the T540XP and not the battery T540iXP, which has no recoil starter.

A reliable starter matters more on a climbing saw than on most others. You often start a top-handle saw while tied in, so a starter that slips or a rope that won't rewind means extra effort and time in the tree. Keeping the starter clean and replacing worn parts promptly helps you work smoothly. If the housing is cracked, replace the full assembly rather than patching it.

Fitting and safety

Remove the screws holding the starter, lift it off, and clean the flywheel area. Fit the new starter, ensuring the pawls engage, and tighten the screws evenly. Test the pull gently a few times before starting the saw.

Top-handle saws are for trained arborists working from a secure position. Start the saw safely according to the manual and check the chain brake before climbing. More T540XP parts are in our chainsaw parts section.
