Husqvarna T540XP Cylinder Cover Assembly

This Husqvarna T540XP cylinder cover assembly replaces the top cover on the gas top-handle saw. On a climbing saw that gets bumped and dropped, the cover can crack or lose its latch, letting chips toward the air filter.

Why replace a cracked cover

The cylinder cover keeps sawdust and moisture away from the air filter and spark plug and helps direct cooling air. Climbers drop saws onto lanyards and knock them against stems, and covers take the hit. A cracked cover lets fine dust work toward the intake, which wears the engine.

A loose cover can also rattle off and fall out of the tree, which is a hazard for the ground crew.

When cleaning the air filter on a top-handle saw, do it on the ground, not in the tree, so the cover and filter cannot fall. Keep the old cover's fasteners as spares if they are in good shape. If your saw's cover has a quick-release latch, make sure it locks firmly in place before you send the saw back up on the tool line.

Fitting it

Remove the old cover, clean around the air filter and cylinder fins, and fit the new cover so it seats evenly with the latch or fasteners fully engaged. Check the air filter and plug while it is off.
