When a cap needs replacing

Tank caps wear in a few predictable ways. The rubber seal flattens or tears and the cap weeps. The threads or locking tabs crack from being overtightened or dropped. Or the cap simply goes missing on a jobsite. Any of these can let fuel out or let chips and water in, and contaminated fuel leads to clogged filters and carburetor trouble.

A cap that leaks fuel near a hot muffler is a fire risk, so do not put it off.

If your saw has been leaking from the cap for a while, wipe down the area and check for damage to the filler neck too. A cracked neck will leak no matter how good the cap is. Also check that you are using the right cap on the right tank. Mixing up fuel and oil caps on saws that use different parts for each tank is a common cause of leaks.

Getting the right one

Husqvarna uses different caps across its saw range, and fuel and oil caps are not always the same part. Check your model and the cap markings before ordering. Clean the filler threads, fit the new cap by hand and make sure it seats fully.
