A replacement clutch assembly for the Husqvarna 390XP.
This Husqvarna 390XP clutch assembly replaces a worn or broken clutch on Husqvarna's big-bore felling saw. A healthy clutch engages cleanly under throttle and lets the chain stop at idle.
A clutch that slips smells hot, glazes the drum, and loses power in the cut. Broken springs or worn shoes can also leave the chain turning at idle, which is a hazard. If the chain moves at idle after adjusting the carburetor, inspect the clutch.
Find matching drums, sprockets, and other parts in our power equipment parts.
Big saws that spend time pinched, cutting stumps, or running long bars load the clutch hard, so wear is normal over time. Running a dull chain or forcing the saw into the cut adds heat and speeds it up.
Remove the spark plug lead, lock the piston with a proper piston stop, and use the right clutch tool. Note the thread direction in the service manual.
Check the clutch drum, rim sprocket, and needle bearing while it is apart and replace worn parts. Grease the bearing, and test that the chain stops at idle before going back to work.
Confirm the part number against your model and serial before ordering. If you're unsure, take the saw to a qualified shop. A clutch that comes apart under load is a hazard. Store the old clutch parts until the new one is tested, in case you need to compare. Keep the chain brake band clean too.

If the drum is grooved, glazed, or the sprocket is worn, yes. A new clutch on a worn drum wears out faster.
Idle speed set too high or a worn clutch spring are common causes. Check both.
