Maintenance

Husqvarna 50:1 pre-mix 2-stroke fuel comes ready to pour, with oil already blended in at the right ratio. This 4.75 gallon size is aimed at crews and heavy users who want consistent fuel for every saw, blower and trimmer on the truck.

Why crews use premixed 2-stroke fuel

Pump gas with ethanol picks up water, goes stale and gums up carburetors, especially in saws that only come out for storm work. Premixed 2-stroke fuel is ethanol-free and already blended with oil, so it stores better and every tank gets the same mix.

On a crew, mixing is where mistakes happen. Someone forgets the oil, doubles it, or uses the wrong ratio from a different machine. A sealed container of Husqvarna premix removes that variable. Top-handle saws, big felling saws and blowers all get the same fuel.

Premix also helps with equipment that runs only a few times a year: the pole saw, the backup blower, the big felling saw that comes out for the occasional large removal. Running those machines on fuel that does not go stale makes them more likely to start when you need them.

Is the bulk size worth it

Quart cans are handy for homeowners and for keeping a spare in the climber's kit, but they get expensive for a crew that burns through several gallons a day. The 4.75 gallon size brings the cost per gallon down and cuts the pile of empty cans in the truck.

If you run a lot of fuel, compare the cost with mixing your own using quality oil such as Husqvarna XP 2-stroke oil and ethanol-free gas. Many crews use premix for low-use equipment and seasonal saws and mix their own for daily saws.

Think about how fast you will use it. A bulk container makes the most sense when a crew will go through it in a reasonable time. A homeowner with one saw may be better off buying quarts and opening them as needed.

Storage and handling

Keep the container sealed and out of direct sun when it is not in use. Once opened, close it tightly and use it within the period the label recommends. Pour into a clean, labeled fuel can or straight into equipment, outdoors and away from sparks, and let hot saws cool before you refuel.

Before switching a saw from ethanol pump gas to premix, check the carburetor setting with your dealer or the saw's manual. Always follow the engine maker's fuel recommendations.

Keep a small funnel or spout dedicated to premix so it does not pick up dirt or another fluid. Clean fuel matters more in small saw carburetors than most people think.

Which equipment can use it

Any 2-stroke engine that calls for a 50:1 ratio can use it, regardless of brand. Do not use it in 4-stroke engines or in machines that call for a different ratio. When in doubt, check the operator's manual.

At the end of the season, many owners run their saws on premix before storing them. That leaves ethanol-free fuel in the carburetor instead of pump gas that can leave varnish behind, and it makes the first start in spring a lot less frustrating.
