PruningClimbingPro grade

The Silky Zubat Arborist Edition is the 13-inch (330 mm) curved Zubat saw set up for tree climbers with an arborist-style scabbard. It is one of the most common climbing hand saws on tree crews.

A climber's standard

The Zubat is a curved 330 mm saw with aggressive pull-stroke teeth that cut green wood very quickly. The curve lets the blade bite on overhead cuts and helps it stay engaged when you are cutting from an awkward position. The Arborist Edition pairs it with a scabbard designed to ride on a saddle.

If you mostly cut at or below shoulder height in tight spots, a straight blade like the Gomtaro may suit you better. Compare in our hand saws and scabbards.

Many climbers treat the Zubat as their main hand saw and add a smaller folding saw for detail work. The 13-inch length reaches through most limbs you would cut by hand while staying easy to carry.

Carrying and care

When you carry a hand saw aloft, keep it in a scabbard on your saddle and make two-handed cuts away from your rope and lanyard. Follow ANSI Z133 and get trained before you climb. The Zubat cuts fast, so keep your free hand and your lanyard well clear.

Wipe sap off after use, keep the blade dry, and swap in a replacement Zubat blade when the teeth dull.

Inspect the scabbard and its clip often, since a loose saw is a hazard to the ground crew below.
