PruningClimbing

This Fanno 13" hand saw pairs a 13-inch pruning blade with a traditional wooden handle. Fanno makes its saws in the US, and this one is a straightforward tool for pruning cuts aloft and limbing on the ground.

A traditional pruning saw

Plenty of climbers still like the feel of a wooden handle: it stays warm in winter, does not get slick the way some plastics do, and fits the hand naturally. The Fanno 13-inch saw pairs that handle with a blade long enough for most pruning cuts and short enough to manage one-handed for positioning.

Thirteen inches is a common size for climbers because it reaches through cuts in 4 to 6 inch limbs without being awkward on a saddle. Compare it with other options in our hand saws and scabbards.

It also works well on the ground for limbing brush before it goes in the chipper, cutting small stubs flush, and trimming roots when you are planting or clearing a hole.

Carrying and care

When you carry a hand saw aloft, keep it in a scabbard on your saddle and make two-handed cuts away from your rope and lanyard. Follow ANSI Z133 and get trained before you climb.

Wipe sap off after the job and keep the blade dry. A wooden handle lasts longer if you do not leave it soaking in a wet truck bed. Check that the blade fasteners stay tight.
