PruningClimbingPro grade

The Silky Tsurugi is a curved pruning saw, shown here with medium teeth. The curve helps the blade bite on overhead cuts, and medium teeth balance cutting speed with a clean face on pruning cuts.

Curved blade, medium teeth

A curved blade pulls itself into the wood, which helps on overhead cuts and on limbs you reach from an awkward stance. Medium teeth are a good all-round choice: fast enough for green limbs, smooth enough to leave a clean pruning cut that seals well.

Silky offers several curved saws at different lengths and tooth sizes. Choose the length that suits your typical cuts and how you carry it on your saddle. Compare options in our hand saws and scabbards.

Medium teeth are also a little more forgiving in dry or dead wood than extra-large teeth, which can grab and chatter. That makes this setup a sensible choice for climbers who do a lot of crown cleaning and deadwood removal as well as live pruning.

Carrying and care

When you carry a hand saw aloft, keep it in a scabbard on your saddle and make two-handed cuts away from your rope and lanyard. Follow ANSI Z133 and get trained before you climb.

Wipe sap off after the job, keep the blade dry, and swap in a replacement blade when the teeth dull.

Check the scabbard clip on your saddle regularly so the saw cannot fall out on a big swing.
