PruningClimbing

The Silky Gomtaro 300mm is a straight-blade pruning saw that comes with a scabbard. It is a long-time favorite with climbers and landscapers for fast, clean pull cuts and a stiff blade that tracks straight.

Why the Gomtaro is so common

The Gomtaro is one of the saws that made Silky popular with tree crews. The straight 300 mm blade is stiff, so it tracks well and is less prone to wandering in the cut. The Japanese pull-stroke teeth cut quickly and leave a clean face, which matters on pruning cuts.

A straight blade is easy to control below shoulder height and in tight spots. If you do more overhead cutting, a curved Silky like the Zubat may suit you better. Compare in our hand saws and scabbards.

The 300 mm length suits most hand pruning cuts and rides comfortably on a saddle. On the ground it is a quick tool for limbing brush and cutting roots during planting.

Carrying and care

When you carry a hand saw aloft, keep it in a scabbard on your saddle and make two-handed cuts away from your rope and lanyard. Follow ANSI Z133 and get trained before you climb.

Let the pull stroke do the work and avoid forcing the push. Wipe sap off after use. When the teeth dull, fit a replacement Gomtaro blade instead of buying a new saw.

Keep the scabbard clear of sawdust so the saw seats fully and does not rattle loose.
