Pruning

The Silky Hayate sickle blade is a replacement hook-style blade for the Hayate pole system, sold as a blade only. A sickle edge is useful for slicing vines, water sprouts and small shoots that a saw blade snags on.

For the stuff a saw hates

Saw teeth are made for wood. Vines, suckers and soft shoots tend to flex away from a saw and wrap around the blade. A sickle edge hooks the material and slices it on the pull, which is faster and cleaner for that kind of clean-up work.

Confirm the blade matches your Hayate before ordering, as Silky's pole saws use different mounts. Saw blades for the Hayate and other saws are in our blades section.

It is handy on clearance pruning along fences and buildings, on trees choked with vines, and for removing water sprouts after a heavy reduction. For anything woody and thicker than a finger, switch back to the saw blade rather than forcing the sickle.

Swapping and care

Change blades on the ground with the pole collapsed. Make sure the blade is seated and secure before you extend the pole. A sickle edge is sharp along its whole length, so wear gloves and keep the cover on when it is not in use.

Wipe it clean and dry after use. Never use a pole saw near energized power lines unless you are a trained, qualified line-clearance arborist with the right equipment, and keep the minimum approach distances in ANSI Z133.
