Why carry a grinder guard

A stump grinder throws material hard and far, and one rock through a sliding door wipes out the profit on the job. A portable guard set between the wheel and the house, car, or street catches most of that debris and keeps it close to the stump, which also makes cleanup faster.

Setting it up

Place the guard on the side where debris would do the most damage, close enough to catch the throw but clear of the cutter wheel and the machine's swing. Reposition it as you work around the stump, and pick rocks and metal out of the work area before you start.

A guard reduces flying debris but does not replace a safe exclusion zone. Keep bystanders well back, wear eye, face, and hearing protection, and follow the grinder maker's manual and ANSI Z133.

Wipe the panels down after the job so dirt does not build up on the hinges and stiffen them.
