GroundMaintenancePro grade

This stump grinder tooth pocket holds a standard tooth on the cutter wheel. Pockets take the same punishment as the teeth, and a worn pocket lets even a new tooth shift and loosen.

What the pocket does

The pocket clamps the tooth to the cutter wheel and supports it against impact. When a pocket wears, cracks, or gets peened by rocks, the tooth no longer seats tightly. You will see teeth working loose, uneven cutting, and more vibration.

Check pockets at every tooth change, especially after hitting rock or buried metal.

Pockets can also wear on the face where the tooth seats. Even if the pocket looks whole, a tooth that will not tighten down square is a sign the pocket is done.

Rocky sites, buried concrete, and old fence posts are hard on pockets. Probing around a stump and raking back loose stones before grinding helps protect both pockets and teeth.

Fitting tips

Lock out the grinder and clean the wheel. Fit the pocket in the correct orientation for the wheel's rotation, use good bolts and nuts, and torque to spec. Recheck after a short run.

Change pockets in pairs or sets where your wheel layout calls for it, so the wheel stays balanced. Keep a spare pocket, bolts, and teeth in the grinder truck. A wheel that runs smooth and true cuts faster and is easier on bearings, belts, and the operator.
