GroundSafetyPro grade

The Stein Modular Guard System is a set of free-standing panels that you set up as a stump grinder guard around the cutting area. It knocks down chips, stones and debris thrown by the cutter wheel so you can grind next to windows, siding, fences and parked cars with less risk.

Why a stump grinder guard pays for itself

A stump grinder's cutter wheel throws chips, soil and stones hard and far. In an open lawn that is a cleanup job. Next to a picture window, a vinyl fence or the customer's truck, it is an insurance claim. A portable stump grinder guard like the Stein Modular Guard System puts a physical barrier between the wheel and anything you cannot afford to break.

It also protects people. Ground crew, homeowners who wander over to watch, and neighbors walking past all benefit from a barrier that catches most of the throw. It does not replace a proper exclusion zone, but it makes the zone easier to manage on tight sites.

A guard also speeds up the job. With less debris flying across the property, there is less cleanup at the end, fewer chips in flower beds and pools, and less time spent explaining dings to a homeowner.

How the modular setup works

The system is made of separate panels that stand on their own and connect to each other, so you can arrange them to suit the job. Wrap them around three sides of a stump next to a foundation, run a straight wall along a driveway, or close off the side facing the street. Because the panels are modular, you only set up as much as you need.

Position the guard on the side where the throw is heading, which on most grinders is the direction the wheel is cutting. Leave yourself room to sweep the wheel and to step clear of the machine. Recheck the layout every time you move to a new stump or change the side you are cutting from.

On sloped sites, set panels on firm ground and check they cannot tip toward the grinder or a bystander. Wind can catch a panel too, so place them where they will not blow over during the cut.

Running a safer grinding site

Even with a guard up, keep bystanders well back, wear eye, face and hearing protection, and follow the grinder manufacturer's instructions for guards and safe distances. Call in utility locates before you grind, and probe for rocks, metal and irrigation lines around the stump. A hidden stone can be thrown with enough force to crack a panel or worse.

Inspect the panels for cracks, bent frames and loose connectors before each job. A damaged panel will not stop debris the way it should, so replace it rather than nursing it along.

Treat the guard as part of your site setup, just like cones and signs, and make setting it up a standard step before the grinder ever starts.

Who it suits

Stump grinding contractors, tree services that grind their own stumps, and municipal crews working near traffic and storefronts all get value from a portable guard. See more equipment for this work in our stump grinding section.

A portable guard is especially useful for crews grinding in urban areas, along fences and next to parked cars where there is no room for a wide exclusion zone.
