Ground

The Husqvarna pickaroon is a short-handled pick that lets you grab, drag and toss firewood rounds and small logs without reaching down with your hands. It saves your back and fingers on any job where you are moving a lot of cut wood.

What a pickaroon does on a tree job

After the saw work is done, someone has to move the wood. A pickaroon puts a hardened point on the end of a handle so you can stick a round, drag it to the pile and flip it into the truck or onto the stack without bending over for every piece. On a big cleanup that adds up to a lot less strain on your back.

It also keeps your hands out of the way. Rounds roll, splits have sharp edges and stacks shift. Hooking a piece from arm's length is safer than grabbing it, especially when you are loading a dump body or feeding a splitter all afternoon.

Using and caring for it

Swing the point into end grain or side grain with a short, controlled stroke, then pull. Work with the pile, not across your feet, and keep the point clear of your legs when you carry it. Do not use a pickaroon as a lever on big logs. That is a job for a peavey or cant hook.

Keep the point reasonably sharp with a file so it bites instead of glancing off, and check that the head is tight on the handle before each use. Check the listing for the current handle length and head design. For more tools for moving and stacking wood, see our log handling tools.
