PruningGround

This 12 foot wood pole is made from ash, the traditional wood for tool handles because it is strong, a little springy and comfortable in the hand. It is a solid base for a pole saw or pruner head when you want a one-piece pole with no joints to work loose.

Why ash

Ash has been the go-to wood for long handles for generations. It is strong for its weight, flexes a little instead of snapping, and has a feel many workers prefer to fiberglass. A one-piece ash pole has no sections to lock or wear, so there is nothing to rattle when you are working a saw hard.

Twelve feet is a useful length for orchard work, low canopy lifting and clearing hangers from the ground. Fit your pruner or saw head and you have a simple, durable tool.

A one-piece 12 ft wooden pole is also easy to maintain. There are no locks, collars or buttons to fail, and a worn handle can be sanded smooth. For orchard crews and homeowners who prune the same trees every year, it is a simple, long-lived option.

Limits and care

Wood conducts electricity, especially when it is damp. Never use a wooden pole anywhere near power lines. For that, qualified line-clearance arborists use dielectric fiberglass poles under ANSI Z133.

Store the pole dry and flat so it does not bow, and give it a light coat of linseed oil now and then. Check for cracks, splits and loose hardware before use. Compare other options in poles and kits.

Wood can also hide damage. Sight down the pole now and then, look for checks and splits near the ends, and retire it if it starts to bow or crack.
