PruningMaintenance

The Jameson JA-34 link is a replacement part for the linkage on Jameson pole pruner heads. When the link bends or the holes wear oval, the blade loses stroke and starts crushing instead of cutting, and a new link is the cheap fix.

When to replace the link

A pole pruner takes a beating. It gets dropped in the bed of the truck, yanked through crotches and twisted when a limb pinches the blade. The link between the lever and the blade is one of the parts that pays for that. Once it bends even slightly, the blade stops closing fully against the hook and you get chewed, half-cut limbs that have to be torn off.

Check the link whenever the cut feels rough or the head hangs open. Look for a bend, cracks around the holes or holes that have worn oval. Any of those means it is time for a new one.

It helps to understand why the link fails first. Most bends come from twisting the pole while the blade is still in the cut, or from forcing a limb that is beyond the head's capacity. Let the blade finish its stroke, back the hook out straight, and switch to a pole saw for anything thick. Keep a small parts box in the truck with the springs, bolts and links your heads use. A ten minute repair in the yard beats losing half a day of pole work to a part you could have had on hand.

Fitting it

Pull the bolt or pin that holds the old link, note how it sits, and fit the new JA-34 the same way round. Use new hardware if the old bolt is worn, snug it so the parts move freely without slop, and work the head through a few full strokes before going back to work.

Confirm the part number against your pruner head before ordering, since Jameson has made several heads over the years. For complete heads, poles and kits, see our poles and pole kits range.
