PruningMaintenance

The Jameson Big Mouth pruner spring is the return spring that pulls the blade back open after each cut. When it weakens or breaks, the head hangs closed and you end up shaking the pole to reset it, which slows every cut.

Why the spring matters

The Big Mouth is built for bigger bites than a standard pole pruner, and the spring works hard to open that wider jaw every time you let off the rope. Over a season of clearing lines or lifting canopies, springs lose tension, stretch or snap at the hook.

A tired spring shows up as a blade that drifts open slowly, or one that doesn't open far enough to get over the next limb. Swapping it takes a few minutes and makes the tool feel new again.

Springs also wear faster when the head is stored with the blade closed under tension, or left wet and dirty. Hang the pruner with the jaw open if you can, and wipe off sap and grit at the end of the day. A little care spreads replacement out, but springs are still consumables and should be treated that way. Keep a small parts box in the truck with the springs, bolts and links your heads use. A ten minute repair in the yard beats losing half a day of pole work to a part you could have had on hand.

Swapping it out

Lay the head on a bench, note how the old spring is hooked, and remove it. Hook the new spring in the same position, then run the blade through several full strokes to make sure it opens fully and closes without binding.

While the head is apart, check the blade edge, the bolts and the pulley for wear. Keep a spare spring in the truck if Big Mouth pruners are in daily use. More pole parts are in our poles and pole kits section.
