SafetyClimbingGroundPro grade

The Husqvarna X-COM R headset is hearing protection with built-in crew communication, part of the Husqvarna X-COM line. It lets a climber and ground crew talk in a normal voice over a running saw or chipper instead of shouting and waving.

Why crew comms change the job

Most rigging problems start with a missed call. The climber says hold, the groundie hears let it run. With an X-COM headset, both can talk in a normal voice over a saw, a chipper or traffic, so lowering, felling and drop zone calls are clear the first time.

The X-COM R adds a built-in radio to Husqvarna's communication hearing protection. Check the listing for radio type, range, phone pairing and whether it mounts to a helmet or a headband, and make sure the whole crew is on compatible units. See more communication gear.

Fit, care and safe use

Hearing protection only works if it seals. Fit the cups over your ears with no hair, glasses arms or hood in the way, and check the noise rating against your saws and chipper. Charge it each night so it does not die halfway through a removal.

Comms do not replace a clear plan. Agree on commands before the job starts, use a backup signal if a unit drops out, and follow ANSI Z133 communication requirements. Inspect cushions and replace them when they crack or stiffen.

Keep units clean and dry, store them out of direct sun, and keep the firmware current if the listing or Husqvarna's instructions call for it. Label each headset so crew members keep their own cushions and fit.
