1/2 in. Whoopie Sling with Medium Ring

A whoopie sling is an adjustable sling spliced from hollow-braid line, and this 1/2 in. version comes with a medium ring on the fixed eye. It lets you set a rigging block or redirect on stems of many sizes and tighten it snug without tying knots.

How a whoopie sling works

A whoopie is a length of hollow-braid line spliced so that one part of the rope runs inside itself. Pull the tail and the loop shrinks; load it and the outer braid grips the inner, locking the length. That lets one sling fit a spar, a fork or a big leader without a girth hitch that is too long or too short.

The ring on the fixed eye gives you a clean attachment point for a block or a redirect, and it helps the sling choke down evenly on the stem. Many climbers use a whoopie and ring as a quick anchor for a lowering block on medium-size removals.

Whoopie slings pack small, weigh little and do not rust, so they are easy to carry up the tree. Many climbers keep two or three in different lengths so they always have one that fits the stem in front of them.

Use and inspection

Snug the sling tight before loading so it cannot slip down the stem, and keep the adjustable section within the length the maker allows. Check the rated strength of the sling and the ring, and stay well inside it, because rigging loads spike when wood drops before the line catches it.
