Buying guide

Picking cleanup equipment

Backpack blowers move sawdust and chips off driveways and lawns quickly and are easier on the arms than handheld models for long cleanups. Handheld blowers are fine for small jobs and quick touch-ups. String trimmers and combination tools handle edges and growth around stumps.

Power cutters are for concrete, steel and masonry, not wood. Wear eye and hearing protection with all of this gear, and keep bystanders clear of blower debris.

Maintenance and care

Clean the air filter often, especially in sawdust-heavy cleanups. Check that intake guards and screens are in place so debris cannot be pulled into the fan. For trimmers, keep the head clean and use line in the diameter the head is designed for.

Power cutters need the right wheel for the material, and the wheel must be rated for the cutter's speed. Store fuel-powered equipment with fresh or stabilized fuel, or run it dry for long storage. Hearing and eye protection are a must with all of these tools.

Common questions

Do I need a backpack blower or a handheld?

For daily crew cleanup a backpack blower saves time and fatigue. A handheld is a good second unit for quick jobs.
