Climbing

treeMOTION shoulder straps clip onto Teufelberger's treeMOTION saddle to carry some of its weight on your shoulders. With a saw, handsaw, and rigging gear hanging off the saddle, the straps keep it from sagging and make long days easier on your hips.

Why add shoulder straps

A treeMOTION already carries weight well, but a full rack still pulls down on your hips. Saw on one side, handsaw and pole saw on the other, a lanyard, a few slings and carabiners: by midafternoon you feel it. Shoulder straps transfer part of that load to your upper body and keep the waist belt from creeping down.

Straps also help when you are hanging in the saddle on a long ascent or working out on a limb, because the saddle stays oriented and the attachment points stay where your hands expect them.

Straps are also handy for climbers who run a chest-mounted ascender or a rope-walking setup on SRS, because they keep the chest attachment in position. Check that your system is set up the way the device and saddle manufacturers describe.

Fitting them

Attach the straps at the points Teufelberger specifies and adjust them so they are snug without pulling the saddle up into your ribs. Check the adjustment again over a winter jacket. Confirm the straps match your treeMOTION version; other saddle parts and shoulder harnesses are listed in this category.

Shoulder straps are a comfort and positioning accessory, not a substitute for your saddle's rated attachment points. Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every climb, and be used only by trained climbers.
