Husqvarna H47 Full Chisel Skip Tooth Chain 3/8 x .050

The Husqvarna H47 is a 3/8 pitch, .050 gauge skip chain with full chisel cutters with fewer teeth per loop. On long bars in big wood it pulls fast and clears chips well, which keeps the saw from bogging.

Why skip tooth

Skip chain removes some cutters from a standard sequence. Fewer cutters mean less drag and more room for chips, which helps a saw pull a long bar through large diameter wood. The tradeoff is a slightly rougher cut and a bit more vibration on small wood.

Full chisel cutters cut fast in clean wood but dull quicker in dirty bark. Use it for felling and bucking big logs, not for stump work near the ground. More loops are in chainsaw chain.

Skip chain also needs less power per foot of bar, which helps a saw that is near the limit of its bar length. Many cutters keep a skip loop for their longest bar and run full-comp chain on shorter bars for cleaner cuts.

Filing and fit

File full chisel with the correct round file and keep the top plate angle consistent. Check depth gauges every few sharpenings.

Order the drive link count that matches your bar length, and confirm your bar is 3/8 pitch and .050 gauge. Running a skip chain on a bar and sprocket in good condition gives the best result.

Keep the cutters the same length around the loop. Uneven cutters make a skip chain pull to one side and leave a rough, curved cut. Check chain tension often in the first hour of a new loop, as new chain stretches a little before it settles in.
