Maintenance

The Pferd file is a go-to for sawyers who sharpen in the field, and this dozen pack keeps the truck, the shop and every saw kit stocked. Classic round files cut cleanly and leave a consistent edge on the cutters.

Picking the right size

File diameter must match the chain. The wrong size changes the cutter's hook and dulls faster or grabs. Check the chain's packaging or manufacturer chart; common sizes include 5/32 in., 3/16 in. and 7/32 in. for most saw chain used on tree work.

Use a file holder or guide to keep the angle and depth consistent, and file in one direction, away from you, with steady strokes.

Pferd files are made in Germany and are known among sawyers for a consistent cut from file to file. A dozen pack lets you keep a fresh file in every saw kit and replace them as soon as they start to dull.

Getting the most from each file

Rotate the file a little every few strokes so it wears evenly. Keep files dry and stored in a sleeve so they do not knock against each other and dull. Replace a file as soon as it slides instead of cuts. Lower depth gauges as needed and wear gloves while sharpening. Keep a Husqvarna combination wrench handy for tension checks.

Sharpen little and often. A few strokes per cutter at every fuel stop keeps a chain cutting far better than waiting until the saw starts to smoke and pull to one side. Keep every cutter the same length so the chain runs straight in the cut.
