Field vise you tap into a stump to hold the saw steady for filing.
The Husqvarna stump vise holds your saw bar steady so you can sharpen on the job. Tap it into a stump or log, clamp the bar, and file the chain at a comfortable height without wrestling the saw.
Filing a chain with the saw sitting loose on a tailgate gives uneven cutters and a chain that pulls to one side. A stump vise fixes that. Drive it into a stump, tighten the jaws on the bar, and the saw holds still while you file every cutter at the same angle and length. It is the closest thing to a bench vise you can carry in your pocket.
Pick a solid stump at a height that lets you stand comfortably over the saw.
A stump vise also keeps you from filing with the saw balanced on your knee, which is both bad for the chain and a good way to get cut. It is small enough to keep in a saw kit or chap pocket, so you can sharpen whenever the chain gets dull rather than putting it off until the end of the day.
Clamp on the bar, not the chain, and leave enough room for the file to pass. Stop the engine and set the chain brake before sharpening. Knock the vise out of the stump when you finish so it does not get left behind or catch a saw later.
