Maintenance

Timber Savage round chainsaw files sharpen the cutters on your chain in the field or the shop. Choose the diameter that matches your chain, and replace files once they stop biting.

Picking the right size

File diameter has to match the chain. Too small and you hook the cutter. Too big and you change the top-plate angle and weaken the edge. Most chains have the correct file size printed on the box or listed in the saw manual. Keep the right size for each saw on the truck, especially if the crew runs a mix of top handles, mid-size and big saws.

Use a file holder or guide to keep the file at the right height and angle.

Round files are consumables, and a worn file is one of the most common reasons a chain will not cut well even after sharpening. It slides over the cutter without removing steel and leaves a rounded edge. Buying files in packs keeps the cost down and means there is always a fresh one in the kit. Fit a file handle for better control and safer filing.

Getting a good edge

Clamp the bar, set the chain brake, and file with smooth strokes away from you, rotating the file slightly so it wears evenly. Give each cutter the same number of strokes. A file that skates instead of biting is worn out. Swap it before it costs you time.

Flat files, guides and depth gauges are in our wrenches and files section.
