A replacement end nail that keeps your Spencer logging tape in service.
The Spencer logging tape replacement nail fixes the part of a logging tape that wears out first: the hooked nail at the end of the blade. A fresh nail bites into end grain and holds while you walk the log, so you get accurate lengths again.
A logging tape only works if the end stays put while you walk out the length. A dull, bent, or missing nail pulls out of the end grain halfway down the log, and you lose the measurement. That makes the nail the most common replacement part on the tape, and it is worth keeping a couple in the truck.
Swapping the nail is quicker and cheaper than replacing the blade or the whole tape, and it keeps a tape you know is accurate in service.
Nails wear fastest when you set them into hard, frozen, or dirty end grain, or when the tape snaps back hard and the nail strikes the case. Letting the blade retract under control instead of releasing it at full length keeps both the nail and the blade alive longer. Inspect the nail at the start of each week so you are not caught out on a log job.
Follow Spencer's instructions for your tape model. Make sure the new nail is seated firmly on the blade end and that the tape still reads correctly against a known length after the swap. A loose nail can throw off every cut.
Retract the tape and keep it clear of the chain before you start cutting. More tapes, refills, and parts are in forestry tools.
