The Husqvarna logger tape is a 50 ft (15 m) self-retracting measuring tape that clips to your belt so you can measure and mark log lengths without a helper. Hook the nail into the end of the log, walk out, and mark your cut.

Measuring logs on the job

When a customer wants the trunk left in 16 in rounds for firewood, or a mill wants saw logs at set lengths, guessing with the bar wastes wood. A logger tape lets one person hook the end of the log, walk the length, and scribe a mark with the saw at each cut point. The tape retracts as you walk back, so it stays out of the chips.

A 50 ft tape covers most saw log lengths with room for trim allowance. It also works for laying out a drop zone or checking the distance to a structure before felling.

Add a few inches of trim allowance to each log so the mill or the customer gets full length after the ends are squared. Mark with a shallow saw nick or crayon so the marks stay visible after the log is rolled.

Using it around the saw

Retract the tape and keep it clear before you start cutting; a tape blade near a running chain gets cut fast. Wear your chaps and keep good footing when walking a log, especially on slopes or wet bark.

The nail and blade are wear items. Replacement nails and refills are available for many logger tapes, so a damaged blade does not mean buying the whole unit. See more forestry tools.
