ClimbingPro grade

The Buckingham Alta Verde climbing harness is an arborist saddle from Buckingham, a long-time maker of climbing and line gear. A saddle is the part of your kit you spend all day in, so fit and comfort matter as much as features.

Choosing a saddle

A saddle carries your weight, your gear, and your positioning lanyard for hours at a time. Look for a fit that spreads the load across your back and legs, an attachment setup that suits how you climb, and gear loops where your hands expect them.

Check sizing against your waist and leg measurements before ordering. Compare with other Buckingham saddles to see which suits your work.

Buckingham has made climbing saddles, spurs, and lineman gear for a long time, and its saddles are found on plenty of working climbers.

Setup and inspection

Adjust the waist and leg straps so the saddle sits snug without pinching, then hang in it low to the ground and check comfort before climbing. Set up bridge and attachment points exactly as the manufacturer instructs.

Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard, follow ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions, be inspected before every climb, and be used only by trained climbers. Retire a saddle with cut or worn webbing, damaged stitching, or cracked or corroded buckles, and follow the manufacturer's service life.

Wash and dry the saddle as the manufacturer recommends, keep it away from chainsaw fuel and bar oil, and store it out of the sun. Log its date of first use so you know when it reaches the end of its service life.
