Single Bit Axe Sheath

A single bit axe sheath covers the edge of a single bit axe so it travels safely in the truck or saw box. It protects the edge from nicks and protects you from the edge when you reach into a tool bin.

Why sheath your axe

A felling axe usually rides in the truck with saws, wedges, and fuel. Without a cover, the edge gets nicked on metal and is a hazard to anyone reaching in. A sheath protects both, and it keeps the edge sharp for driving wedges and limbing.

Axe sheaths are cheap compared to the time it takes to file out a nicked edge or treat a cut hand. If an axe rides in the truck, it should wear a sheath.

Fit and care

A good fit holds the head without wobbling and keeps the edge fully covered. A loose sheath can slip off, and a tight one can be hard to remove with gloves on.

Keep a leather sheath dry and condition it occasionally so it doesn't crack. Don't store a wet axe in its sheath; let both dry to avoid rust on the head.

Check the sheath now and then for cuts from the edge, loose rivets, or broken straps. A sheath that has been cut through no longer protects anything, and a worn strap lets the sheath slide off on rough roads.
