Gibbs makes rope ascenders used by tree climbers, cavers and rope workers. The Gibbs ascender uses a cam that grips the rope, and climbers often use it as a foot ascender or as part of an SRT system.

Gibbs ascenders have been around for a long time and are known for a simple, rugged cam design. Arborists who climb on a stationary rope use them to make ascending more efficient, often paired with another ascender or a hitch system.
Confirm the ascender is compatible with your rope diameter and sheath, and learn how to rig and release it correctly before you leave the ground. Check the cam, spring and pins for wear and grit. Any gear that holds a person must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before each use, and be used by trained climbers.
