The ISA arborist study guide is the primary reference candidates use to prepare for the ISA Certified Arborist exam. It covers the knowledge domains on the test, from tree biology and soil to pruning, diagnosis, and safety.

What the study guide covers

The arborists' certification study guide walks through the knowledge areas the ISA exam tests: tree biology, identification and selection, soil management, installation and establishment, pruning, diagnosis and treatment, tree protection, urban forestry, tree risk management, and safe work practices. Each chapter ends with review questions so you can check what stuck.

Many people call it the ISA book or ISA study guide; it is the official text candidates are pointed to.

The guide is written for people with some field experience. If you have been working in tree care for a few years, much of the material will feel familiar, but chapters on soils, biology, and diagnosis often fill gaps that day-to-day work does not cover.

How to study with it

Read a chapter a week, take notes in your own words, and work through the review questions. Tie each chapter to something you see on the job. Pair the guide with the ANSI A300 standard and ANSI Z133, which the exam draws on. Check ISA's current exam requirements and edition before buying.

Set a test date a few months out and work backward to plan your reading. Study groups and practice exams help, and many local ISA chapters run review courses. Keep the guide after you pass; it is a solid reference for continuing education and for explaining recommendations to clients.
